Profile of Rev. Dr. Peter Paris

Rev. Dr. Peter Paris

Reverend Dr. Peter J. Paris is the Elmer G. Homrighausen Professor of Christian Social Ethics, Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. He has also taught at Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, TN, Howard University School of Divinity in Washington D.C.,  Union theological Seminary in New York City, and Harvard University Divinity School.

Dr. Paris  was born and brought up in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He earned his B.A. and B.D. degrees from Acadia University and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago which honored him as alumnus of the year in 1995.  He has been the recipient of honorary doctoral degrees from Acadia University, McGill University, Lehigh University, and Lafayette College. He is ordained in the African United Baptist Association in Nova Scotia.

Dr. Paris has published the following books: (a) Black Religious Leaders: Unity in Diversity; (b) The Social Teaching of the Black Churches; (c) The Spirituality of African Peoples: The Search for a Common Moral Discourse; (d) Virtues and Values: The African and African American Experience.  He has also edited The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York, and Religion and Poverty: Pan-African Perspectives.  All are available at Amazon.com. He has co-edited other books and has authored chapters in books and numerous essays in academic journals. He is the General Editor of a series with New York University Press on Religion, Race and Ethnicity.

Dr. Paris has been elected to several national offices including the Presidencies of the American Academy of Religion; the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society for the Study of Black Religion, and The American Theological Society. He has served as Vice President of the Society for Values in Higher Education. He is a member of the editorial Boards of The Journal of Religion; The Journal of the American Academy of Religion; Soundings: An Interdisciplinary Journal; Journal of Constructive Theology (South Africa); The Toronto Journal of Theology, and the Journal of African Theology in Ghana. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago Divinity School and presently serves on the Board of Trustees of the New York Theological Seminary. Here in Princeton he is a member and former president of the Board of Trustees of the Princeton Young Achievers (an after-school program).

Dr. Paris has lectured widely throughout Canada, the United States, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. 

In recent years he has been the guest speaker at centennial anniversary of the Union United Church in Montreal and the 175 anniversary speaker at the First Baptist Church in Toronto. Last September he was the speaker for the Atlantic Baptist Fellowship at the 400th anniversary of Baptist history at First Baptist Church in Amherst. 

Dr. Paris is married to Ms. C. Adrienne Daniels Paris, founder and President of Ashby Daniels Associates, an Executive Recruiting Company.
